Portrait Gallery

Welcome to the Portrait Gallery. Betsy's portraits of children have been quite popular due to her ability to capture on canvas both their energy and innocence. She is also equally adept at portraying the beauty and elegance of women and the rugged, yet distinguished appearance of men. Her portraits combine a realistic likeness of her subject with a touch of impressionism. Betsy paints her portraits in both oils and in a combined medium of pastels and watercolors.

"My passion for portraiture flows naturally from my enjoyment of people and my love of painting. My goal for portraiture is threefold: to render an accurate likeness, to portray personality and to create a painting of beauty."

- Betsy Boyle Harper

Procedures

Betsy prefers to meet with her clients either at the studio or at the client's home or business to review her portfolio and develop the ideas and concepts for the portrait. Details such as size, background, setting, clothing, etc. are discussed at the first meeting. The location of the portrait and framing possibilities are also discussed. Photographs may be taken that day or at a later time. Betsy likes to take between 50 and 100 photographs of the subject. She works with the client to determine which photographs most closely represent the personality of the sitter. For oil paintings, an 8x10 color study is completed and reviewed by the client for approval of the colors and composition prior to beginning the final work. Betsy meets with the client to deliver the final painting and will do final touches at that time as necessary.
